I have been on a GF diet for over a year and I don not feel better

Hello, I have been on a GF diet for over a year and I don not feel better. My doctor has checked that I don't have any vitamins or mineral deficiency and everything seems to be normal. However, I don't feel better and to some extent I feel worse. I used to feel tired all the time and had anaemia. But now I don't have anaemia anymore but still feel tired, my leg muscles have started to have spasms and occasionally I feel one of my legs go numb. I know it can take several years before I feel healthy, but is it really normal that I start feeling worse before I feel well? Can the long term anaemia I had have caused irreversible issues with my muscles?

First, long standing anemia does not gives you chronic leg cramps and numbness. Sometimes it may be secondary to magnesium deficiency but the data on his connection is not that convincing.  Depending on your age and other medical information, your current problem may not be related to your celiac disease, only (although many adults with long standing, untreated celiac disease use several years on GFD before they return to “normal” health). If your celiac diagnosis was performed “after the book” with intestinal biopsy, and you have almost no clinical improvement after one year on GFD, you should return to your  GP to be examined for other condition that may explain your fatigue and other problems. The celiac disease may have been discovered, "accidentally" during the GP- examination for your original condition and my not explain it all. You may suffer from other conditions as well.
